The product I will discuss is bread in France and the United States. Bread is a common product in both countries, but serves a much more important purpose in French culture. Bread is viewed as an important part of the meal. It is eaten with every meal and is sometimes used in a similar way as a fork or spoon. On the other hand, bread is seen as a side dish in U.S. culture, which means it is infrequently served. Although, bread is commonly used for sandwiches.
The appearance of bread in the two cultures is very different. French bread usually comes in a loaf with a hard crust. In France, it is the shape and texture of the bread that determines the type of bread, whereas in America, the type of bread is determined by the flavor. France has a long history with bread, and it has not changed a lot in recent years. The hard crust makes it easy to use as a utensil while eating.
In contrast, American bread is usually soft and sliced. The slicing of the bread is very important because it makes eating bread clean, easy, and convenient. There is an American saying that highlights the importance of the sliced nature of the bread. When something is exciting, new, or very innovative, a person will exclaim: "This is the best thing since sliced bread!" Americans love their soft, sliced bread loaves because Americans love convenience.
The cost of the bread also differs. French bread is usually very affordable since there is high demand (many people want it every day), and because the product does not last very long. Typically, French bread is only edible for 1-2 days. After 1 or 2 days, it becomes very hard and difficult, even painful, to eat. Because of its short lifespan, bread usually only costs about a euro. However, American bread is rather expensive. High quality bread could cost $4-5 dollars, but it will last 1-2 weeks. Americans appreciate value. Value sometimes means getting a lot of use out of a product without it going bad. In contrast, French people appreciate quality. It is very important for them to eat fresh food each day.
Despite these differences, it is clear that bread is an important part of both cultures, even though it is used and produced in different ways.
Instructions: Choose a product found in your culture and in U.S. culture and write a short essay about the differences between the two. Give reasons to explain the differences. ReplyDeleteAutomotive is necessary product in our modern life. It used for transportation of people, transportation of many products that is include food. Currently, there are over 600 million vehicles in the world. So, automotive industry is very big business and global business. Many companies sell their products in worldwide. But, it has changed for suitability to each country. What is the difference? Why is it changed? I will introduce some example that is difference between U.S. vehicle and Japanese vehicle and explain some reasons.
First, side of driver seat is different between US and japan. In U.S., driver seat is left side. In japan, usually driver seat is right side. It is result of suitability to traffic rule. In U.S. vehicle must run right side of road. In japan, vehicle must run left side of road. In many countries, vehicle must rum right side. But, Japan decided the traffic rules from England.
Also, popular type of vehicle is different. U.S peoples like big car that like pickup trucks traditionally. Nowadays, peoples has had interesting of fuel saving. So, a part of U.S. peoples buy small vehicle or economy vehicle like a hybrid car. But, U.S. road is very wide. We take car for long travel. We buy many items that are included big items in shopping. So, big vehicle are suitable to U.S. The other side, Japanese people usually buy a small vehicle or middle size vehicle. Especially very small vehicle that is called “kei-jidousya” is bought by many peoples. It has just 660cc engine and small compartment. But, it is suitable to Japanese road. Japanese road is very narrow and traffic is terrible. Usually, road is cloud in urban cities in Japan.
These examples are part of difference between U.S. vehicle and Japanese vehicle. If you go other country, you may find many differences. Then you should think about reason of differences. There are necessities. So, let’s compare some cultures.
Yeah you are right,lots of american like trucks and huge cars but ha-ha don't forget american like to buy Japanese car so there also are lots of people to buy small car.

DeleteThe culture I will discuss is about a Tax in Korea and the United States. A tax is important wherever in the world. Almost countries require citizen to pay taxes when they buy some products. When people don’t pay taxes, they will lose their right in both of countries. But there are differences between whether price includes a tax or not and how much rate should people pay for a tax.
ReplyDeleteBoth of countries must pay taxes. But there is difference whether taxes are included or excluded in price. In Korea, all of price includes tax. So we don’t need to recalculate when we buy something. But, the United States is not. When I traveled to New York, I was surprised because almost products were cheaper than Korea’s. But, when I paid money, I recognized that it doesn’t include a tax. So I had to pay more money. Now, I get used to pay taxes even if it isn’t included in price, but it was tricky for me at first time.
Furthermore, there is difference how much tax should I pay when buy something. Korea is smaller than the United States. It helps Korea government manage tax more easily. So we apply same tax rate whole of country. But, the United States is huge country. They can’t control every part of states. So they put states government, and they apply different tax rate each states. It explains why they can’t include taxes in price. Interesting fact is that if people who live Arizona State want to buy products that made in Nevada State, they don’t need to pay taxes. Because they are not Nevada state citizens and Nevada government can’t force them to pay states taxes.
Despite of differences of taxes, it can’t be denied how taxes are important in both of countries. But, we should consider different culture and environment between two countries.
When I buy something in U.S., after recalculate I feel that I spend too much money. It makes me feel poor.

ReplyDeleteThe product that I will talk about is rice in the U.S and rice in my home country (Kuwait). The reason for selecting rice as a product for compare and contrast is because I think rice is one of the products that really show and explain the culture of its own country. As my father arrived to the U.S he asked me if I have rice for cooking, old people as my father who is 58 years old really enjoy rice with meat or with fish which is called (Machbous) as a pleasant meal. So I and my father went to a grocery store to buy a bag of rice, by the time we got to the rice shelf we noticed something different about this rice and my home country (Kuwait) rice. The rice in America is a lot shorter than the rice in Kuwait or in Asia, also after you cook the American rice you’ll find it sticky and so big, also so soft. The rice in my home country is little bit tall and thin and cooked with oil and water so it doesn’t get sticky.
Like I said I think rice is one of the products that really show and explain the culture of its own country. In my opinion I think that the reason why American rice is like that because in America rice is used in small quantities, like it’s a side dish or extra addition to a meal, and most important rice in America is imported from China, Japan, and Italy. These mentioned countries use really soft rice, because Italian food such as risotto, also Japanese food such as sushi uses really soft rice, it’s a traditional thing to them. In the other hand Kuwaiti rice is much more different than the American rice, one of the reasons to this explanation is because Kuwaiti rice is imported from India and some Arabian countries, also the way of using and serving rice in my home country is 180 degrees different from American usage. In Kuwait, rice is served as the main dish and it should be little bit stiff.
Price of the rice in my home country and the U.S are not alike. In Kuwait the usage of rice is so high; proximately every day Kuwaiti families eat rice as their main meal of the day, in other words Kuwaiti people can’t live without rice, so the coast of rice in Kuwait is much cheaper than the coast of rice in America.
In the end both cultures agree on one point and that is rice is an important factor in both food societies. It’s counted one of the foods that have a good effect on human’s diet.
I read your essay interestedly, because Japanese staple is rice! People of each country are different from favor of rice. I like Japanese rice!!
DeleteChina actually is an agricultural country so we have various kinds of grain:wheat ,straw ,flour...But rice is the most important food in our country .In the first few days after I came to Tucson,I hadn't had any rice ,which made me very uncomfortable because I didn't particular like American food .After I found my apartment that I'm living in right now ,I bought a rice cooker and a bag of Thai rice ,so I was able to have rice for my dinner again !
DeleteSmiling can be obviously seen in Thailand and the U.S. I believe that smiling is the important way to make new friends. If you smile to someone that means you open your mind to accept him or her to be your friend. Even though, it is just a greeting.
ReplyDeleteWhen I stayed in Thailand, everyone always smiled to me and they made me feel comfortable. Do you know, Thailand is called as “the Land of Smiles”? They welcome everyone coming to their country and want to make them feel impressive. Most people shy to say something to tourists, and that does not mean they would not like to help the tourists. It is due to they are not able to speak English fully but they are really sincere and friendly. Moreover, they keep a smile and a cool heart regularly, never to show anger in an argument.
In contrast, American people greet you by say hello with smiling and they play big actions, like wave their hand. Not only wave their hand but they also give you a hug. Those actions descries that Americans are very nice. Americans have very high confident. So they show a lot of feeling and say everything that they are thinking. Whereas, low confident Thai people say only few words. Because of Thai’s culture treats they seem like babies all the time.
However, smiling is needed from everyone, everywhere and every time. Although we have different cultures but the purpose of our smiles is the same.
I felt differences of smiling between U.S. and Japan too.

ReplyDeleteThe product I will discuss is shoes in Japan and the US. Shoes are common products all over the world, but where persons wear them is not the same. In Japan shoes can go around limited outside so we Japanese must take them off before we go into our room. In the US shoes can go everywhere, even dining room and living room, except on the bed. It suggests us two important differences of lifestyle between Japanese and American.
ReplyDeleteAt first, we Japanese have traditionally slept on the mattress directly put on the floor and sometimes lie relaxed there, while Americans have slept on the bed. So we do not like walking around in the house with shoes, while Americans do this.
Secondly, there are foyers at almost all of houses in Japan. The level of the room floor is usually little above the foyer. We take off our shoes there and go into the room like stepping one stair. In the US foyers like these are not found at houses because Americans do not take off their shoes before they go into the rooms.
Shoes can help us understand that there are two important differences of culture between Japan and the US, sleeping style and the construction of houses.

DeleteIn Thailand, we take our shoes off when we go into home or even classroom in the primary school. We want to keep our home clean all the time. Although we sleep on the bed, we still take the shoes off. But I have ever heard that some Americans wear their shoes when they are sleeping!

the vending machine. We can easily buy soda any places in U.S. I was wondering why
are they drink too much soda. We can just drink water. I prefer that you drink water than
drink soda.
Soda contains a lot of sugar. Too much sugar is very harmful to your body. It
makes that the people more fat and it cause many kinds of disease. People who are
obese have a greater risk of cancer. We can see many obese in U.S. When I go to the
restaurant, the waiter always asks me whether I want to drink something or not. And I
can see all the people who in the restaurant they are almost drinking soda. I want
to know why they love soda.
In the other hand, we usually drink water in Korea. It is hard to find the vending
machines anywhere. We can just find it at the big shopping mall. And When I go to the
restaurant the waiter don’t ask me whether I want to drink or not. If I want to drink
something, I have to ask waiter to give me soda. It is the difference of between Korea and the U.S
And I was surprised that the difference of size. If I ordered small size soda in U.S., it was large size in Korea. So I think it makes American to gain weight. How can they drink it all? It is too big. When I go to the starbucks, I always order short or tall size. But, I can see many people order venti size in here. It is also very different . I feel that I also gain weight in here. Because everybody always drinking soda, so I feel that I have to drinking soda together.
I know that the soda is very sweet and makes me cool. I just want to say that If you want to be more healthier , you should better stop drinking soda.

It's interested! When I go to restaurant, waiter certainly asks me "Would you like something to drink?" Against my better judgment, I always order coke... When I was in Japan, I didn't drink soda such as coke at all. I think, too that diabetes patients and hypertension patients decrease in America if American reduce to drink soda. As a result, Medical expenses restrain in America because of decrease of them.

ReplyDeleteWhen I came here first, I thought that the U.S and Korea have very different culture. Of course, every country can be very different or very similar. Sometimes when I do something to someone, it can be good for someone. But in different country and different culture, someone can misunderstand it.
I think in the U.S eye contact is very special behavior to me. In Korea, when I talk to someone, especially to the elder or admired person, we never have eye contact. While talking, I lower my head to be respectful. If I make an eye contact, normally, they think that I am rude or being resistance to someone. But in America, it is opposite. Someone told me while I was talking to him that I have to make an eye contact to the person I’m speaking to. If I don’t, it is rude and I’m hide something or lying. When I heard that I was really surprised. Even though same action, different culture analyze it in different ways.
Smiling has different meaning in Korea and the U.S. In the U.S, for example, when I first came here, I went to the shopping mall, made an eye contact and that person smiled at me, so I thought ‘Does she know me? Why she is smiling to me? Did I make any mistake?’ Few minutes later, when I saw the other person, He was also smiling at me. I was curious about that. So later I realized that it was just a manner. In Korea, that is very different. Sometimes, when someone and I make an eye contact, we never smile to each other. That means we don’t care about each other and we think something is wrong or somebody wants to talk to me something. So if we smile at each other, we have purpose to someone. Normally, smiling is a good expression but it can have different meaning in different culture.
In the world, many people live many different ways. Nobody knows which one is the best or worst. But I think every country has to respect different culture and try to learn other culture.
Nowdays, movie almost becomes the common entertainment around the world. Lots of people love movies which can express their feeling of life or make them amazing. But maybe there are some differences and similarities between China and US. Generally, China has lots of ancient costume movies and has the theme of war. In US these has lots of different theme movies such as action, romantic, inspirational films etc.
ReplyDeleteFirst, the theme between China and US is totally different. For China, movies always have background of history accidents. For example Red Cliff is a famous movie in China and some of other countries; it talks about an accident in ancient china which has three little tribes’ battles. We have lots of movies like it. But in US there have lots of famous movies such as Forrest Gump, Pearl Harbor, Titanic and etc. they are not similar at all. So I think it is because China has a long history than US (China has thousands of years’ history but US built their country since 1776). And we have plenty of events to product into movies. In addition, I think another reason is Kung Fu which is famous in western countries; maybe lots of American knows Bruce Lee.
In contrast, there also have some similarities about movies. In the movies, always have some part of action or romantic. We all know lots of movies have this part. For instance The Shawshank Redemption, talks about a man be trapped and finally escapes from prison. When Shawshank was in prison, it also has a part of action. Similarly, Red Cliff has the action between two countries, too. People also like to watch this maybe because everyone wants to be a elite of Kung Fu,and movies can make them to become the man who them wanna be. Movies always have a man to fall in love with a woman,it is a necessary in movies. Maybe it's because everyone will get married and most of people want to fall in love but in realistic world not, therefore directors think it's perfect to have a love story. Lots of people will love it and attracted by the movie.
The cost of movie is also similar. If you want to see a movie in China, you will pay about 10 dollars. Maybe different city have different prices. In big city you need to pay more. Similarly, in US you also need to pay about 10 dollars. US has a long movie history and Hollywood is the most famous place around the world. So maybe the price of movie industry has matured. For China in recent years the price has accepted with people and China‘s movie got good progress. I think it's because China don't has a matured market,and makes the movie ticket not cheap. But as america maybe they will pay lots salaries to actor, therefore makes the price also not cheap.
Generally, movie industry is a big market in both US and China. There also are lots of people who like movies. Two countries have lots of common grounds such as movie ticket and content of movies, also have some differences like the theme. I think the two countries will have a big progress in the next few years.
I think this is a great contrast essay, but the differences between Chinese movies and American movies are not clearly, the example is too simple. I think the scenes are different, and the atmosphere in American movies are different from chinese movies

Firstly, tea is part of drink that we drinking for every day. We have 5000 years history, and the tea was improving fast during in this years. On the anther hand, all the American tea is absolutely different with Chinese tea and that’s a special culture for American.

Tea for china is very important, in the ancient china (2000years ago), our ancestors found a leaves can burned it and made some amazing water and then they called this leaves tea. There have lots of different tea in china; because of there have part of mountain area part of the Chinese geography. This geography is special mountain climate for tea grown up. In my opinion, tea for china is an important culture and to effect whole the world. For example, as you know dinner for Chinese is a heavy time. So before the dinner, someone just sit like a group and taste tea. Secondly, Chinese tea has some different kings. But in America, people always drink black tea or green tea. In this point, tea for Chinese likes coffee for American. Some reasons for why American do not have tea culture is American do not have a better climate for tea grown up. So, in this modern society we have some special tea like fruit tea or flower tea. All above these points, just Chinese love tea for culture, American love tea for taste.
Of coure,the tea culture in china has a long history .We don't drink tea,we juse enjoy the tea culture!

The product I will talk about is the alcohol drinks in China and United States. Alcohol drinks is one of the most popular drinks in China as well as United States. The alcohol drinks are placed everywhere in our daily life. However, the alcohol drinks serves and makes in the both countries are very different.
ReplyDeleteThere are some similarities between the 2 countries. Chinese spirits is the most important and popular alcohol in China. It plays a vital role in Chinese culture and people’s daily life. No matter how the ceremony large or how the family meeting small, the people drink Chinese spirits. Alcohol is viewed as important in United State too. When there is a party or a meeting, they drink alcohol. Therefore, alcohol is common in both countries.
There are a lot of differences between the two kinds of alcohol, such as appearance, color, the methods they make, the materials. The Chinese spirits is usually made from special rice and special water. What is special? It is the material which is product in some special area. And then the alcohol is made by professional alcohol teacher through several long-lasting time steps and different professional alcohol teacher to check and taste. The alcohol made in United State, most of it is made of grape. And it is producted by several complicated steps in a wood container.
The Chinese spirits does not have color, it looks like water. But it is easy to make people to feel drunk. In contrast, the alcohol drinks in United State, such as red wine, cocktail or anything else, most of them have color or taste like fruits.
Even though there are quite lots of differences and similarities between the two countries in alcohol drinks. But it is really make a important role in our life!
this was an interesting story, but in Saudi Arabia, it is prohibited and illegal to drink alcohol. Even though I am in the United States now, I will not drink alcohol.

Of course, they are used in America and Japan, too. They are essential for us to do housekeeping. Also, they are evolved daily because of developing electric science. However, there are some differences between America and Japan about their functions. I would like to discuss about function of washing machine in America and Japan.
ReplyDeleteFirst, the functions of washing of washing machines vary between US and Japan. The washing function of washing machines from America is too strong. I think that merely washing machines from America wash clothes with adequate water and detergents. As a result, our clothes are often torn and discolored. On the other hand, the function of washing machines from Japan is delicate. Also, we can select some channel of washing function. Of course, our clothes aren’t torn and faded color. Also, washing machines from Japan use less water than washing machines from America to wash our clothes. So washing machines from Japan are good for environment because we can reduce polluted water from washing machines.
Second, the functions of drying of washing machines vary between America and Japan. Generally, washing machines from America have driers with washing machines. On the other hand, in washing machine from Japan case, they depend on washing machines whether they have driers or not. I think that this difference between the two countries is rerated to difference of their culture. In Japan, we dry our clothes outside on sunny day. So we don’t use driers frequently. On the other hand, in America, they always use driers to dry their clothes. So their washing machines need driers absolutely. I think why American use driers every time strangely. Why Americans use electricity to dry their clothes in spite of the sun has a power to dry our clothes outside? We emit carbon with making electricity. Of course, when we use drier, the drier emit carbon. In short, I think that they aren’t efficient and ecological to use drier to dry their clothes.
Differences of culture and country generate differences of products such as washing machines. We should respect each culture. However, I think that we should adopt each advantages and reasonable ways. As a result, it is awesome if each other grow up well.
Cool topic. But in my opinion, i see the usage of driers is much better than sun, because driers just takes 20 minutes, in the other hand sun light takes 1 hour or more.
DeleteWashing machine culture in my country is also different for American culture. We hardly use a drier because there is high intense sunlight in Thailand. Clothes can be dried in short time. We can conserve a lot of energy and save the earth.

ReplyDeleteRegardless what kind of style of the buildings of the two countries might be,they must have some similarities .First ,a building is a building ,of which the major use is for people to live .People regard the buildings as their home ,a shelter from the rain and snow .Also ,each building of the two countries just shares the same structure of construction .Most of the buildings are made of bricks ,rebar and cement ,which will make sure the building will be firm enough to undertake the destructive weather ,so the safety of the building is guaranteed by these materials .Finally ,if the building is too tall ,there will be elevators inside the building ,which will make it easier for people to move .Anyway ,there're a lot of basical simalarities between the American and Chinese buildings .
As to differences ,they usually reflect in the outline and pattern of the buildings .Buldings in the USA ,more specifically speaking ,in Tuscon ,they always look like cubes ,regardless whether they're singluar level or not.Even the roof of the buldings is flat ,like one side of the square.And from my own observation ,the residental buildings in Tucson are always 1 or 2 floors' ,at most 3 floors . In contrast ,the residental buildings in China are always like cuboids and they always have more than 7 floors ,even 20-30 floors! Perhaps it's because there much more people in China than those in USA ,so cuboid and high buildings have a better capacity to hold more people ,which is very important for China because of the large population .Also ,the buildings in China ,like my hometown--Jinan ,their roofs are not flat at all .Instead ,they look like pyramid .This is because there is much more rainfall in Jinan than Tucson so the pyramid structure makes it easier to drain away the drops ,or else the drops can permeate into the roofs .We can see that structure and pattern of the residental buildings in USA and China just matches their national condition and climate .
The style of the buildings in different countries just reflect the baic difference of culture .You can just perceive one country's culture by observing their building styles--from internal to external.
Its true. Also in Kuwait our buildings are so strong and made of cement. But i also find American houses so cute and small, they're so interesting.

I think it is really interesting to know how things differ in every culture, even if it is about the same thing. When first I came to America I was surprised that there are differences in the way people use hand signs. Some hand signs have a nice meaning here in America while it is not back in Saudi Arabia.
The first sign that I saw and was surprised that it means something totally different from what I knew is the “peace” sign. Having the index and middle finger opened preforms this sign. When a man performed this sign to me, I first thought he was asking me for a cigarette, so I took the box out of my pocket and I gave him a cigarette. Then he said “I don’t smoke” and I said “but you made this sign which means may I have a cigarette please.” He started laughing and he said that this doesn’t mean that I would like a cigarette this means peace. He told me that many Americans show the sign when they see friends. So I searched in the Internet about signs and I found out that some signs are totally different in meaning from what I knew in Saudi Arabia.
When I searched for different hand signs, I found that there are a lot of signs which are totally different in meaning, such as the sign that means ‘perfect.’ In Saudi Arabia, the ‘perfect’ sign means ‘I threaten you if you do it again.’ In my country, when we tell a child to sit down we make the sign that means ‘see you later’ in America.
The only sign that I saw to have the same meaning here in America and in Saudi Arabia is the ‘hitchhiking’ sign. But, there is another use for this sign, depending on the situation. Some Saudis use it when they are angry because it means ‘talk to the boss’ or ‘get out of here.’ I also found out that in America, this sign also means ‘good job,’ which is also the same in Saudi Arabia.
Sometimes small differences can make a lot of chance because of their meaning.
When I came first, I confused hand sign either. while I drived, some driver opened the window then he thrusted out his arm. That sign was his direction. If he bent his arm up, he want to go to right side.

ReplyDeleteI will discuss a wedding reception in the United States and Saudi Arabia. There is a massive impact between wedding reception in Saudi Arabia and the United States. Saudi Arabia is a conservative society. Because of this women and men have been separated wedding receptions. In contrast American wedding is totally mixed reception and as I know celebrate on an open area such as a park or houses’ yards, while Saudi wedding reception takes place in a close area. Secondary, American wedding reception start morning and Saudi wedding reception start in the evening (8-10 a.m). On the other hand, groom’s wear is totally different. Saudi groom wears traditional Saudi clothes, but an American groom wears a tuxedo. On the other side, brides are similar; they wear a white gown. In general, human being around the world has different ways of celebrating wedding reception but have likely same feeling.
Interesting! Different countries have their different styles of wedding celebration ,which is according to the local culture and convention . In China ,we have two basical kinds of celebrations:the trandional one and the modern one .Guess the wedding celebration in our country just conbine and mix both the eastern and western's culutre and style. Hope one day you may visit China and experience it yourself !

DeleteThe only thing I want to contrast between China and America is table manners. Since I went to America, I found there are too many differences between the two countries. And the table manners give me a deep impressive. When your friends invite you to join a party or another meeting, you maybe go to have a dinner together. So the table manners are very important for you.
ReplyDeleteThe sitting manners between two countries are quite different. In China, all of the people share some big plates to take food. But in America, everyone has their own plate, and American people fetch food by themselves. In china, the host like to place some food into your bowl even your bowl is not empty yet. I think American people don’t like this, they are all independent. It’s the polite and respect for Chinese host, but American may think it’s impolite and they like to be independent.
Do we have to eat all of the food in china? Yes, we do. But my teacher Amy told me, American don’t have to eat all them, if they think they are full, they can just leave food on the plate. In china, people think a little amount of rice is made by farmers, it is vey laborious. Eating all of the food is to respect the food.
In America, people use forks and knifes, even forks and knifes can’t make noise. But in china, people use chopsticks. And we can’t make noise when we use chopsticks to fetch food.
The special occasion in china, the host usually makes big elaborate meals, and there are usually consist of 10 or more courses. And rice is not served.
